Some years ago, our client, The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), completely revamped its monthly magazine INNOVATION®. Part of the striking new look of INNOVATION® was the fact that the "I" in "innovation" had a hole punched through the entire magazine where the "dot" normally goes. We were able to obtain a trademark registration for this feature, despite the PTO's concerns that the hole was functional (i.e., a user could hang up the magazine using the hole on a hook).
